About ACANA Red Meat Recipe

ACANA Red Meat Recipe is a grain-free dry dog food made in Edmonton, Alberta, with beef, pork and lamb as its main proteins. About 60% of the recipe comes from animal ingredients, including raw beef, raw pork, raw lamb and organ meats like liver, kidney and tripe. The rest is lentils, peas, chickpeas, pumpkin, squash, leafy greens and fruit.

It's part of ACANA's 2026 lineup and suits dogs of all ages and sizes, except large-breed puppies. The kibble has a freeze-dried coating for extra flavour, which helps with dogs who get bored of their food. It has no corn, wheat, soy or tapioca, and no artificial colours or flavours.

Is ACANA Red Meat Recipe Right for Your Dog?

A good fit if:

  • Your dog loves red meat and you want a richer, meatier kibble.
  • You'd like a grain-free food with no corn, wheat or soy.
  • Your dog is a picky eater. The freeze-dried coating adds flavour.
  • You feed several dogs of different ages and want one food for all of them, except a large-breed puppy.

Maybe not the best choice if:

  • You're feeding a large-breed puppy. Choose a large-breed puppy formula instead.
  • Your dog is allergic to fish. The recipe includes herring meal and fish oil.
  • Your dog needs a single-protein diet. Try ACANA Singles Beef with Pumpkin instead.
  • If your vet has asked you to avoid grain-free or legume-rich diets, look at ACANA's Healthy Grains recipes instead.

Ingredients

Raw beef (11%), raw pork (11%), pork meal (9%), whole red lentils, whole pinto beans, whole green peas, herring meal (8%), pork fat (7%), whole green lentils, whole chickpeas, whole yellow peas, raw lamb (4%), raw pork liver (4%), fish oil (4%), lentil fibre, pea starch, dicalcium phosphate, raw beef liver (1%), raw beef kidney (0.5%), raw beef tripe (0.5%), salt, dried kelp, yeast (S. cerevisiae), fresh whole pumpkin, fresh whole butternut squash, fresh whole zucchini, fresh whole carrots, fresh whole apples, fresh whole pears, fresh kale, fresh spinach, fresh beet greens, fresh turnip greens, whole cranberries, whole blueberries, dried chicory root, turmeric, althea root, rosehips, juniper berries.

Added vitamins and minerals: Taurine, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, vitamins A, D3, E and B-complex. Preserved naturally with tocopherols (vitamin E), citric acid and rosemary extract.

Here's what that means in plain terms. The first seven ingredients include three animal proteins and pork fat, so most of the protein comes from meat. Organ meats like liver, kidney and tripe add natural nutrients. The lentils, beans and peas provide carbohydrates and fibre in place of grains. Dried chicory root is a natural prebiotic that supports digestion.

Calories: 3,475 kcal per kg, or about 417 kcal per standard 250 ml (120 g) cup. About 29% of calories come from protein, 29% from carbohydrates and 42% from fat.

Nutritional adequacy: Formulated to meet nutrient levels for all life stages, except for the growth of large-size dogs (15 kg or more as adults).

Dry matter figures are our own estimate, calculated by removing the 12% moisture, so you can compare this food fairly with wet or raw foods.

Feeding and Switching Foods

How much to feed: Use the feeding chart on the bag as a starting point. At 417 kcal per cup, this is a fairly calorie-dense food, so many dogs need a little less than they would of a lighter kibble. Adjust the amount to keep your dog at a healthy weight.

Switching foods: Mix the new food into your dog's current food over 7 to 10 days, adding a little more each day. A slower switch helps avoid an upset stomach, especially for dogs with sensitive digestion.

Water and storage: Always keep fresh water available. Keep the bag sealed in a cool, dry place.
