About ORIJEN Wild Reserve Wild-Caught Fish Cat Food

ORIJEN Wild Reserve Wild-Caught Fish is a high-protein, grain-free dry cat food that mixes fish-based ORIJEN kibble with freeze-dried shrimp pieces. The first six ingredients are raw whole herring, raw salmon, raw flounder, raw whole rockfish, raw cod and raw whole hake.

The shrimp pieces add a different texture to every bite, which can help with cats who get bored of plain kibble. The animal ingredients are all fish and shrimp, with no poultry. It's crafted in Canada by Champion Petfoods.

Is ORIJEN Wild Reserve Wild-Caught Fish Cat Food Right for Your Cat?

A good fit if:

  • Your cat loves fish, or you want to avoid poultry.
  • Your cat is a picky eater who likes variety in texture.
  • You feed kittens and adult cats from the same bag.
  • You want a food high in omega-3s (2.1%, including 0.8% DHA).

Maybe not the best choice if:

  • Your cat is sensitive to fish or shellfish.
  • Your cat is overweight or not very active. At 529 kcal per cup, it's easy to overfeed.
  • Your vet has recommended a grain-inclusive or legume-free diet. This recipe uses lentils, beans, chickpeas and peas.

Ingredients

Raw whole herring (23%), raw salmon (8%), raw flounder (5%), raw whole rockfish (5%), raw cod (5%), raw whole hake (5%), dehydrated mackerel (5%), dehydrated herring (5%), dehydrated blue whiting (5%), whitefish oil (5%), dehydrated pollock (5%), dehydrated sardine (5%), sunflower oil, whole red lentils, whole pinto beans, freeze-dried shrimp (4%), whole green lentils, whole navy beans, whole chickpeas, whole peas, lentil fibre, dried kelp, yeast (S. cerevisiae), fresh whole pumpkin, fresh whole butternut squash, fresh whole zucchini, fresh whole carrots, fresh whole apples, fresh whole pears, fresh kale, fresh spinach, fresh beet greens, fresh turnip greens, whole cranberries, whole blueberries, dried chicory root, turmeric, althea root, rosehips, juniper berries.

Added vitamins and minerals: Choline chloride, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, vitamins A, D3, E, K3, C and B-complex. Preserved naturally with tocopherols (vitamin E), citric acid and rosemary extract.

In plain terms: the first twelve ingredients are all fish or fish oil, so nearly all of the protein comes from animal sources, which is what cats need as obligate carnivores. The freeze-dried shrimp (4%) is the visible pieces in the bag. Lentils, beans, chickpeas and peas provide carbohydrates and fibre in place of grains.

Fish and shrimp naturally contain taurine, an amino acid cats need for heart and eye health. The recipe guarantees at least 0.3% taurine.

Nutritional adequacy: Formulated for all life stages.

Dry matter figures are our own estimate, calculated by removing the 10% moisture, so you can compare this food fairly with wet or raw foods.

ORIJEN's website currently lists crude ash for this recipe as 19%, which looks like a typo, so we've left it out. Check the bag for the exact figure.

Feeding and Switching Foods

How much to feed: Use the feeding chart on the bag as a starting point. This is a calorie-dense food, so measure meals rather than free-feeding if your cat tends to gain weight. Adjust to keep your cat at a healthy weight.

Kittens and mixed households: It's formulated for all life stages, so kittens and adult cats can share it. Kittens need more food for their size, so follow the kitten amounts on the bag.

Switching foods: Cats can be particular, so mix the new food into your cat's current food over 7 to 10 days, adding a little more each day. A slower switch helps avoid an upset stomach and food refusal.

Water and storage: Always keep fresh water available. Keep the bag sealed in a cool, dry place.
